THE IMPORTANCE OF CLARITY OF DIAMONDS
Clarity is an important feature of a diamond,
and it is important to know how to rank the
clarity of a diamond before you purchase one. It
is
really easy to learn how to grade or rank the
clarity of a diamond. There are essentially
two
things that you must recognize. First,
diamonds
with inclusions and blemishes that you can see, and
second,
those diamonds that are clean visually or that you can
see no inclusions or blemishes with the naked eye. After these first two items have been ascertained, then the clarity of the diamond is
further broken down into subcategories.
Many people incorrectly think that diamond
clarity refers to how clear it is. This is not what the
word clarity is referring to here. Clarity really refers to the interior and
exterior imperfections of the diamond. The
finest diamonds, of course get a grade of FL
or IF – Flawless or Internally Flawless –
meaning that it is perfect diamond. A grade of I-1,
I-2
or I-3 means the diamond is imperfect:
a grade of I-3 being the worst.
Other grades of diamonds are VVS1 and VVS2,
which
mean that the diamond is very, very slightly
imperfect; VS1 and VS2, meaning the
diamond is very slightly imperfect; SI-1 and
SI-2, this means that the diamond is
slightly imperfect.
